TAIWAN President Chen Shui-bian has of officially opened - world's tallest building, the hight at 508m and  takes 101 storeys

The original height of the building was to be 66 storeys, but it was later raised to 88 then to 101 storeys.

Concern: location close to the airport and the possibility of terrorist’s attack and earthquakes strike this area about 68 percent of the world’s earthquakes.

The strongest quake in recent years hit Nantou county, central Taiwan, on September 21,1999.  The quake, measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale, killed 2400 people and injured 10,000.

But design dismissed the worries, saying he (designer C.Y. Lee) has taken precautions and Taipei 101’s steel columns extend 80m underground into rock, and the building's times structure is three to four stronger than most high-rises in Taiwan.               

About 72 floors of will be rented out as offices or restaurants.  About 40 per cent of the floor space has been let.

Taipei 101 holds four world records: structural height (508m), rooftop height (448m), habitable floor height (438m) and fastest elevator (60km/ h).

The Sears Tower in Chicago still keeps the world record for pinnacle / antenna height as it has an 85m-high spire that tops at 527m.
