A fair question. How hard should you work? The answer is, you need to work not harder but smarter. You have to work hard anyway if
you wish to achieve a goal, but the answer will include you need to work
smarter, and one of the ways to work smarter is to get the information you need
to develop the skills that will help you get the job done.
There is a great book called Introduction to Marketing
that was written by Susan Dann
and Stephen Dann. Published by John Wiley & Sons Australia, LTD. 2002.
Chapter 1 is titled
Philosophy, strategy and tactics: overview of marketing.
A definition of what marketing is:
Marketing is the process of planning and executing the conception, pricing, promotion, and distribution of ideas, goods, and services to create exchanges that satisfy individual and organizational objectives

Marketing is a process,
that is an ongoing process. In other words you do not say, `I have completed the
marketing'
Marketing requires planning. It requires forethought, preparation and a plan.
Marketing is involved from
design and delivery. Four pillars of marketing are: The conception, pricing,
promotion and distribution of products.
Marketing involves ideas, goods and services. The idea is to find out what
people want, then the production is tailored to develop goods that people want.
Not to think of a product, then produce it and then convince people to
buy it. That is called Sales Orientation
Marketing
creates exchanges. The means both the customer and the company receive some
benefit from the transaction.
Marketing satisfies individual and organizational objectives. It should be
that there is mutual value benefit for producer and customer.
