Sins of omission

By Hamid Golpira
In this world, there are sins of commission and sins of omission.

The sins of commission, in which people do evil acts, are terrible. But verily, the sins of omission, in which people fail to do the right thing, are somehow worse since they facilitate the sins of commission.

Look at what is happening in Lebanon. The fascist Zionist regime is attacking the people of Lebanon in retaliation for the capture of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah.

The Zionists know that most of the people they are killing are innocent civilians who are not members of Hezbollah and that many of the victims are, or were, not even supporters of Hezbollah. Yet, the Israelis continue their war of collective punishment on an entire nation, killing children and destroying infrastructure that the Lebanese worked hard to rebuild after years of civil war.

Worse still, the world is for the most part silent.

Where are the voices that should be protesting this act of injustice?

The sins of omission have again facilitated the sins of commission.

However, Lebanon is not the only country in the world suffering oppression. There are many forgotten wars and forgotten people.

Billions of people, literally half the world’s population, live in abject poverty. The worst war is the silent war on the poor, in which over 20,000 children die of hunger or poverty-related illnesses every single day.

The war on the poor is genocide, yet, bizarrely, none of the guilty parties are being brought before the International Criminal Court in The Hague to face charges of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.

The haves have forgotten the have-nots, or they are totally indifferent to their plight.

What is happening in Lebanon, the forgotten wars, and the silent war on the poor is truly terrible, but those wars are only injuring and killing people’s physical bodies. There is a more terrible war that is killing the hearts and souls of people.

That’s why so many of the haves have no compassion for the have-nots. Their hearts and souls have been killed, and that is far worse than any damage that can be inflicted upon the human body.

Most of the haves are not even aware of their sins of omission.

It is as if an evil spell has been cast on the haves of this world, killing their compassion for their fellow human beings.

How can the spell be broken?

Well, those of us who are not under the spell must make serious efforts to fight for justice and to wake people up, while relying on help from God.
